When you are looking at return policies, you can actually consider them as an extension of the customer service. So, in most cases, they tend to be fair. However, you need to be careful since return policies vary from retailer to retailer.

One of the things that we see happening over and over again is that since there are return policies, consumers believe that they can always get a full refund no matter what. However, return policies, as we already mentioned above, vary from retail merchant to retail merchant. In addition, since many of these merchants saw their return policies being abused, they have been imposing tighter restrictions and limitations on merchandise returns.

When you are looking for a specific product and you want to ensure that you choose a merchant retailer that has a broad return policy, then you should consider large retailers first. The truth is that most of these upscale retailers tend to allow customers to return the merchandise for a full refund, even when they don’t have the receipt. However, it is important to say that is becoming more difficult each day to find these retailers.

All retailers, the bigger and the smaller ones, have been tightening their return policies. Some of these merchants, for example, will only accept merchandise returns when you have the receipt with the purchase date with you as well as you only have a specific period to do so. Other merchants are willing to accept merchandise returns even if you don’t have the receipt with you. Nevertheless, you will need to have the sale tag intact. A different type of retailers will accept merchandise returns but instead of a cash refund, they will offer you a credit in the store when you don’t have the purchase receipt with you.

What can you expect from Express returns?

One of the big trends that we have been seeing in the last couple of years related to return policies is that retailers are prohibiting returns on certain types of items such as underwear or bathing suits, for example.

While as a consumer you may think that you are being penalized with this tightening of return policies, the truth is that retailers need to balance customer satisfaction with the hassle and cost that are associated with merchandise returns. After all, when a merchant is liberal in what concerns their return policies, customers may tend to abuse their system.

We are sure that you already heard a lot of stories about people buying an expensive dress or shoes to take to a special event and then return it the next day. And the same goes for people who used to buy a high-end computer and use it. Then, when after a couple of months a faster computer was launched, they would return their old one and exchange for the new computer.
