European Union (EU) Guarantees And Returns

As you probably know, EU rules are very different from US rules in what concerns to repair, replaces, exchanges or even refunds.

One of the things that you need to know is that you always have 14 days within the day you ordered a specific product to cancel or return it. In fact, you don’t even need to have a reason or a justification and this rule applies to any products that you buy on a regular shop, online, by mail, telephone, or even from a door-to-door salesperson.

In what concerns to EU guarantees and returns, there are some different aspects that you need to keep in mind.

#1: All Goods Have 2-Year Guarantee, Free Of Charge:

When you buy a good in a local store, on an online shop or by mail order, you always have the right to a minimum 2-year guarantee at no cost. Besides, depending on the country where you are buying the rule, you may have some more protection.

These are the 4 main reasons to return a product.

In case you buy a good in one of the EU countries and it doesn’t work or look as advertised or it’s faulty, the seller will need to either replace or repair the good for free, give you a price reduction or issue you a full refund.

When the seller states that it’s not possible to replace or repair the good, you can usually ask for a partial or full refund. However, there may be some exceptions. For example, if you have a scratch on a CD case, this is considered a minor problem and you may not be entitled to a refund.

Besides the regular rule of the 2-year guarantee we just mentioned, manufacturers or shops can also offer you an additional commercial guarantee or warranty. This can be included in the price or you can get it for an extra.

This kind of warranty gives you even more protection. However, even though you may get it, this doesn’t replace or reduce the minimum 2-year warranty.

#3: Second-Hand Goods:

Second-Hand-Goods

When you are buying second-hand goods, you will also be entitled to the 2-year guarantee. However, you must know that individuals are not covered with this obligation. So, if you buy a second-hand good in a shop, you will have the 2-year guarantee but you may not be entitled to it if you buy the second-hand good to an individual.

In some EU countries, the law allows you to negotiate with the trader who sells you the second-hand good. You may have just a 1-year guarantee but never less than this.

#4: Getting Your Goods Repaired, Replaced Or Refunded:

As soon as you receive your goods, this is when the 2-year guarantee starts. So, if your goods break within these 2 years, the seller or trader will always need to provide the solution for you. In some EU countries, you may also request a remedy directly from the manufacturer.
